If you love the story of Beauty and the Beast, you will definitely love the story of Shrek which has a humorous twist. This tale of true love is something that both adults and children can enjoy.
Shrek is a strong big green ogre whose name came from the Yiddish and German word "Shreck" or "Schreck" which means terror or fear. He is the main character in the Shrek movies and the children's book entitled "Shrek!"
The first Shrek movie catapulted this character to fame. In that movie, he was shown to be an ugly, grumpy, grimy, selfish, and filthy ogre who wants to be alone in the swamp where he lives a carefree life. Despite of being a peaceful creature, townspeople attack him for no other reason than his scary appearance. This is why he prefers to be alone. Fatefully, he was befriended by a hyperactive, energetic, and cheerful donkey. Together, they make the best of friends and journey into a wonderful adventure.
In the first movie, Shrek found the love of his life in Fiona. Along with Donkey, Shrek rescued Fiona from a big dragon that was guarding her in a castle. After the rescue mission, Fiona and Shrek fell in love with each other partly because of their similarities. However, Shrek misinterpreted a conversation between Fiona and Donkey and thought that Fiona dislikes him. Thus, he returned to his swamp nursing a broken heart.
Fortunately, Donkey came to the swamp and convinced Shrek to go to Fiona because he knows that they love each other. They rode the dragon that Donkey seems to be in a relationship with and stopped the wedding between Fiona and Farquaad. Fiona and Shrek declared their love for each other and got married.
In the second movie, Shrek met the parents of Princess Fiona whose dad seems to be unhappy about her ogre husband. The seemingly good-natured Fairy Godmother, the mother of Prince Charming, also came into the picture. She believes that ogres should not have a happily ever after so she wants to force Princess Fiona to marry her son, Prince Charming. She made an agreement with Fiona's father, King Harold, to have their children married.
The cute and cuddly yet valiant Puss in Boots was initially hired by King Harold to assassinate Shrek but he became friends with Shrek and Donkey and vowed to help them in their quest.
In the end, Fairy Godmother burst into bubbles due to an accident and it was revealed that King Harold was once a frog which the Fairy Godmother turned into a human to have a happily ever after. The love of FIona and Shrek was once again victorious and now the parents of Fiona are in very good terms with her husband.
Two more movies followed the second movie and due to the popularity of the character, many toys, merchandises, and Shrek games were made. There are many Shrek games that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. Some popular Shrek games include Shrek Kart, Shrek's Fairytale Kingdom, and Shrek the Third.
