A popular superhero learned that with great power comes great responsibility. But what if you do not want the great power because you do not want the burden of the responsibility that comes with it? This is exactly the dilemma of a young boy, named Aang.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is an animated television series that was shown on Nickelodeon. Its first season was shown on 2005 and its third and last season was shown on 2008. The series was produced and created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino.
The story of the Avatar is set on a world where there are four nations- fire, earth, air, and water. Each nation can bend their element. Thus, there are fire benders, water benders, earth benders, and air benders. However, there is one person who can bend all the elements and serve as the all-powerful being who is responsible for maintaining peace in the world. This person is called the Avatar.
The Avatar dies and reincarnates from one nation to another. A kid is recognized as the Avatar if he or she chooses things that belong to the previous Avatars among thousands of other toys or things. When the Avatar is identified, he or she will then undergo training to master bending the four elements.
When the Avatar is angry or extremely emotional, he or she involuntarily transforms to the Avatar state and gains immense power but has less consciousness as a person. If the Avatar is killed in Avatar state, the Avatar will never reincarnate and will cease to exist. The Avatar is very powerful that is why he or she is not allowed to have a spouse or a family to avoid bias.
In the story, the Avatar from the fire nation was killed by the fire lord (the king of the fire nation) and was bound to be reincarnated as an Air Nomad of the air nation. The fire lord killed the Avatar because he wanted to take over the world and conquer the other nations. Knowing that the Avatar will be reincarnated as an Air Nomad, the fire lord destroyed the air temples and killed all the Air Nomads. Opportunely, the Avatar has escaped before the massacre.
Aang was identified to be the next Avatar but he ran away because he did not want the responsibilities of being an Avatar. He was swept away by a strong typhoon in the middle of an ocean along with Appa, his flying bison. When he was about to drown, he involuntarily transformed into the Avatar state to survive and preserve himself in a spherical prism of ice.
A hundred years later, the fire nation has wreaked havoc all over the world and has started conquering other nations. Katara and Sokka who are from the water nation found Aang frozen in a floating sphere of ice and revived him. The very young and untrained Avatar then has to venture into a world of challenges, love, friendship, and adventure to save the world from the fire nation.
Because of the great plot and popularity of the series many Avatar games and merchandises have been made. Online Avatar games are widely available as flash games. One of the most popular Avatar games is Avatar: The Last Airbender for PS2, Wii, and other gaming platforms.
