It is such a wonder for many people why many children and many adults are fans of SpongeBob SquarePants. But for the people who are fond of him, it is very obvious why.
SpongeBob SquarePants is the main character in his self-titled cartoon TV series. He was made by cartoonist and marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg who wanted an overly optimistic character that is perceived to be annoying by other characters. He thought that a squeaky clean kitchen sponge is appropriate for the concept.
SpongeBob made his first appearance on May 1, 1999 in the pilot episode entitled "Help Wanted". He is a sea sponge that looks like a kitchen sponge. He has big blue eyes, a pointy nose, two front buck teeth that are very prominent, and a lot of holes over his body- somehow making him look like cheese.
The voice of SpongeBob is by Tom Kenny who originally used that voice for a female alligator in the show entitled Rocko's Modern Life. Hillenburg who worked with Kenny on the aforementioned show wanted him to use that voice for SpongeBob SquarePants.
SpongeBob's high-pitched and unique laugh was made on purpose. It was made to fit his personality and add to his individuality just like the way Woody Woodpecker and Popeye's laugh made them highly recognizable.
SpongeBob lives in a pineapple house under the sea, in a fictional place called Bikini Bottom which is said to be under the real tropical island of Bikini Atoll. He lives with his pet Gary, a snail that cannot speak but purrs a lot. He also works at the Krusty Krab-home of the Kraby Patty, a burger which is portrayed to be beyond-words delicious- as a cook. His boss, Mr. Krabs, is a red crab that loves money very much. SpongeBob has received the Employee of the Month award many times.
Aside from being really optimistic, SpongeBob is also very energetic and naive. The show often revolves around his adventures and misadventures with his dumb, pink, and chubby starfish best friend named Patrick who seems to have no interest in getting a job. They love to go "jellyfishing"- which is highly similar to catching butterflies and bird watching - and blowing bubbles.
Another main character is SpongeBob's neighbor, Squidward, who perceives himself as an intelligent and classy, well, octopus. Squidward works in the cashier of Krusty Krab. He is annoyed with SpongeBob and Patrick because of their childishness and silliness. However, the two do not have any idea that Squidward is annoyed with them.
As a request from Nickelodeon to let the main character go to school, SpongeBob goes to Mrs. Puff's Boating School which is like a driving school. He always fails to pass the driving test and is such a pain in the neck for the instructor which is often Mrs. Puff herself. However, in the episode "Gone" SpongeBob has finally been able to pass the driving test and get his driver's license.
Because of the character's popularity among kids and adults alike, many SpongeBob games and products were made. A vast selection of SpongeBob games can be seen as online flash games. Various gaming platforms also have SpongeBob games including Battle for Bikini Bottom, Operation Krabby Patty, SpongeBob: The Movie, and the latest which is Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition.
