If you know X-Men, you must know Wolverine. He is the fierce clawed-fighter with animal instincts. You simply cannot miss him if you have seen the X-Men wherein he is an outstanding member.
Wolverine is commonly known as Logan but his real name is James Howlett. He is one of the fictional characters of Marvel and was created by Len Wein (writer) and John Romita Sr. (artist). He made his first full appearance on November 1974 in the 181st issue of The Incredible Hulk comics.
In the original story, James Howlett is the second child of Elizabeth and John Howlett who are wealthy landowners in Canada. James' elder brother died which caused mental problems to his mother who neglected him. James was a sickly child but he found companionship with his friends Rose and a boy called Dog who both lived in the Howlett estate.
Dog, the son of the groundskeeper Thomas Logan, was severely abused by his father. As they grew up, his father's physical abuse took its toll on Dog and on his personality. Before their adolescence, Dog showed his attraction to Rose inappropriately so James reported it to his father. Dog killed James' pet dog to have revenge. This incident forced John Howlett to send Dog and his father out of the Howlett estate.
When Thomas Logan got drunk, he broke into the estate with his son Dog to get Elizabeth who was implied to be his past lover. John tried to stop them but Thomas shot him as James entered the room. James was enraged and his mutation manifested for the first time. His claws came out and he went on a rampage that killed Thomas Logan and scarred Dog's face. His emotionally disturbed mother committed suicide following the murders that took place in their house. James fled with Rose for their safety.
James changed his name to Logan to hide his identity and he stayed in a mining colony with Rose. Logan's physical strength was developed with his mining job and he found a father figure in Smitty who was his colleague. Logan started to have feelings for Rose but he suppressed it because they are in disguise as cousins. Eventually, Rose ended up with Smitty and though Logan was hurt, he was happy for them.
Unfortunately, Dog tracked them down to kill Logan. When they fought, Logan revealed his claws to the public and when he was about to kill Dog, Rose jumped in to stop him but he accidentally stabbed her with his claws. Logan held Rose in his arms as she died. This incident forced Logan to live in isolation with the wolves.
When he returned, he was recruited by different groups and was abducted for the Weapon X project where the indestructible metal Adamantium was forcibly bound to his skeleton which he survived with the help of his incredible healing ability. He eventually found his way to the X-Men where he used the codename Wolverine and fell in love with Jean Grey.
