If you love Snow White's seven dwarfs, you will definitely love The Smurfs. The Smurfs started from a series of comics strips made by French cartoonist Pierre Culliford (with the pen name Peyo) and was first shown on October 23, 1958.
The Smurfs originated when Pierre was dining at the Belgian coast with his friend Andre Franquin. Pierre fleetingly forgot the word "salt" and instead asked his friend to pass the "schtroumpf". Andre wittily responded saying, "Here is the Schtroumpf. When you are finished schtroumpfing, schtroumpf it back." They spent that weekend using the word "schtroumpf" to replace certain words and they called it the "Schtroumpf Language". Later on, the Dutch word for "Schtroumpf" which is Smurf was adopted in English.
Pierre was the creator (writer and artist) of a comics series entitled Johan et Pirlouit (Johan and Peewit in English) when he came up with the idea of The Smurfs. In one of the adventures of Johan and Peewit, when they were tasked to recover a magic flute, they met a little blue humanoid creature called a "Schtroumpf". The creature was wearing white clothes and had peers who looked exactly like him. However, there is one unique "Schtroumpf" wearing red clothes and has a white beard. This "Schtroumpf" is their elderly leader.
The public received The Smurfs positively. Many toys and merchandises were made based on them. The Smurfs toy collectors also started to abound as the characters rose in popularity. The popular food chain McDonald's even released a range of The Smurfs toys in 2011 which include popular Smurfs like Baby Smurf and Papa Smurf.
The Smurfs are just about three apples tall. They wear a white hat, a pair of white pants that has a hole for their short tail, and some additional accessories sometimes. They can run and walk but they usually skip around on both feet. They also like to eat the leaves of Sarsaparilla which is a real plant. They also love "Smurfberries" which are fruits of Sarsaparilla. However, the "Smurfberries" are only shown in the cartoons and not in the comics.
The stories of The Smurfs often revolve around their great tales of adventure. They also use the "Smurf Language" which is done by replacing random words with the word "smurf". This makes their sentences incomprehensible most of the time. For instance, when they say "I'm smurfing to smurf" you cannot really understand what they mean to say.
The Smurf community is a very ideal community. They exhibit kindness, sharing, and cooperation throughout their community. They believe that each Smurf has something they are good at and each of them contributes to their community. Thus, they can get all their necessities from food, housing, and clothing without using any money in their community.
The popularity of The Smurfs was reinforced when an official movie was released last year. The Smurfs games are available online as flash games. There are also The Smurfs games for various gaming platforms. Well-liked The Smurfs games include The Smurfs Dance Party, Smurf Racer!, and The Adventures of The Smurfs.
